Pianist Sophia Subbayya Vastek presents an afternoon of emotionally transporting and immersive classical music by some of today’s most vital composers. With music by Missy Mazzoli, Mary Kouyoumdjian, Tigran Hamasyan, Sarah Kirkland Snider, Chris Cerrone, Patrick Burke, and Philip Glass, Sophia will weave through musical meditations on displacement, identity, and community.
Pianist and keyboardist Sophia Subbayya Vastek, described as “a wonder” and “audacious” (Inactuelles), and as playing with "passion and profound tenderness” (Second Inversion) and with “serene strokes and lyrical beauty” (Brooklyn Rail), maintains an active career as a performer, educator, interdisciplinary collaborator, and event producer and curator. Her debut album “Histories” was released on innova Recordings with music by Michael Harrison, Donnacha Dennehy, and John Cage, and was produced by multiple Grammy-winning engineer Adam Abeshouse. In addition to her work as a solo pianist, projects include Tilted Arc, a synth and piano-based electronic duo with Sam Torres; Organ Colossal, a musicians’ collective based out of her hometown of Troy, NY; and the Lift Series, a new concert series that she co-founded and curates taking place at the historic Troy Savings Bank Music Hall. She has performed internationally across three continents, and her recordings have been aired on both international and local radio.
