Combining jazz, rock, blues, classical, and world music, IMPetus adamantly, skillfully, and passionately smashes through the barriers between musical styles and categories. They see all styles as leaping-off points to musical and creative flights of fancy. IMPetus’ programs are wired for eclecticity: expect to hear compelling and dynamic originals as well as arrangements of and improvisations on the music of Franz Schubert, Maurice Ravel, Alberto Ginastera, Kurt Weill, Chick Corea, Tom Waits, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Patti Smith, Trent Reznor, tangos, and Rumanian folk songs.
IMPetus is a dynamic trio consisting of vocalist Maria Tegzes, who has been hailed by the Boston Globe as a performer of “superb musicianship and a compellingly assured dramatic presence”, pianist Geoffrey Burleson, whose performances and recordings of classical, jazz, and modern music have received acclaim from The New York Times, London Times, Toronto Globe & Mail, Boston Globe, BBC Music Magazine, Gramophone and elsewhere, and guitarist David “Knife” Fabris, whose eclectic career has taken him from performing at both of President Clinton’s inaugurals to recording duets and touring internationally with jazz/third stream legend Ran Blake.
IMPetus has performed to enthusiastic audiences at Spain’s Santander Festival, Tribeca New Music Festival, Music with a View Festival, San Diego’s NWEAMO Festival, New Rochelle ArtsFest, and at many prominent venues throughout New York City.
